Seniors Film Festival

Emma Thompson has been delivering extraordinary work for four decades. Her early collaborations with Merchant Ivory ( Howards End , The Remains of the Day ) established her as an actor of unusual intelligence and control.

She went on to make Academy Awards history as the only person to win both Best Actress ( Howards End ) and Best Adapted Screenplay ( Sense and Sensibility ). She returned to the tensions between creativity and control in Saving Mr. Banks , where she portrayed P.L. Travers as prickly and guarded opposite Tom Hanks’ Walt Disney, offering a complex portrait of authorship, memory and artistic ownership.

In recent years, Thompson has become an outspoken advocate for better representation of older women on-screen, challenging an industry that too often sidelines women as they age. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande embodies this commitment, centring an older woman’s desire, sexuality and self-discovery with rare honesty.

Join us in our cinemas for a season celebrating Emma Thompson’s work as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival. -Ella Cawthorn, Assistant Curator (Film & TV)
