Inspired by the unique design genius of architect Jørn Utzon and the Sydney Opera House, get creative through a series of fun and playful design exercises for beginners or design lovers, whilst learning about the architectural history of the Sydney Opera House. Join Architect and Educator Louise O’Brien in these Saturday day-long workshops for budding designers.
About the workshops:
Reset Challange Saturday 25 July 2026: Step into a hands-on day long workshop including a short tour of some unique Sydney Opera House spaces. We’re going to reset our brains. We’re going to shake off the usual rules, the ones we follow without even noticing, and ask, “What if the world worked differently?” We’re going to design the impossible. Buildings that float. Rooms where gravity changes. Playgrounds made of shadows. If it sounds strange, you’re on the right track. We’re going to break the rules on purpose. Architects who change the world don’t follow the old rules, they invent new ones You’ll sketch, build, imagine, and collaborate. You’ll share ideas, mix ideas, and turn wild thoughts into even wilder designs.
Regeneration Saturday 17 October 2026: Step into a hands-on day long workshop including a short tour of some unique Sydney Opera House spaces. Inspired by the unique design genius of architect Jørn Utzon and the Sydney Opera House, get creative through a series of fun and playful design exercises for beginners or design lovers, whilst learning about the architectural history of the Sydney Opera House. A regeneration workshop inspired by Jørn Utzon invites participants to explore nature’s patterns, modular creativity and biophilia. Through hands ‑ on making and collective experimentation, ideas grow organically—echoing the Opera House’s spirit of innovation—shaping sustainable futures through curiosity, collaboration and continual transformation. Participants will imagine a regenerated Sydney, grounded in landscape, place and deep care for Country.
WASTETASTIC Saturday 14 November 2026: Step into a hands-on day long workshop including a short tour of some unique Sydney Opera House spaces. WASTETASTIC is an experimental architecture workshop where students explore how waste materials can become the building blocks of imaginative structures. Instead of seeing trash as something discarded, students learn to see it as a resource — full of texture, form, and unexpected design potential. Just as Jørn Utzon cleverly drew on local materials and construction traditions to shape his most iconic designs, students in WASTETASTIC will learn to see everyday waste as a resource with its own architectural potential.” The workshop blends sustainability, material exploration, and architectural thinking in a way that feels playful, inventive, and visually exciting.
