Rent, buy – or neither. A sharp new black comedy set in Sydney. “BOBBIE: It’s hard not to think “I wonder how long Mum and Dad have left?”. Am I a monster? WILL: Maybe. But then so am I . BOBBIE: Maybe this is just in the collective millennial imagination right now. In Sydney, at least .” It’s 2027. A pair of terrace houses in Surry Hills. They belong to John, who lives in the nice one, and today he is celebrating turning sixty-five. His 30-something son has moved back home after his life fell apart. His daughter has left her husband – after John paid all that bloody money for the wedding. Things are coming to a head, on this his birthday night. The lives of our landlord family and their tenant in the leaky house next door are going to become messily intertwined. And in the end, landlords have the power. Or do they? From the writer-director team that brought to Belvoir Never Closer and A Room With a View, The Landlord is an impressive new Australian play about families, inequity, the corrosive effects of wealth, and the extreme measures the whole sorry business of ‘property’ has driven us to. The effervescent Ariadne Sgouros and talented Zoe Terakes will be in the directorial hands of Belvoir’s Associate Director Hannah Goodwin. This play is cut-glass sharp and a great evening of dicing with the way we live now.
