Rose has lived and worked at The Lark all her life. It’s a small inner-city pub, but for Rose it’s a universe. Now, inevitably, gentrification has come to her part of the world, and demolition is around the corner. All things must pass, but can Rose escape The Lark’s song and find something beyond the drip trays – and the ghosts which haunt this little piece of Australia? A eulogy for a vanishing world, and a deft capturing of the grandeur in one seemingly little life. Noni Hazlehurst is a national treasure, and has been part of the Belvoir story since the very beginning, when she was one of the artists who rescued this relic of working-class inner-city Australia. So you can imagine how excited we are to bring her back – many of you will remember how superb she was in her last collaboration with Daniel Keene’s writing, Mother – and it’s fitting that she’s back in Daniel’s excellent play of work, the city, families, and memory. Noni is sublime – but you know that. – Eamon Hazlehurst is not to be missed, get your tickets now and bring your tissues. Theatre Matters a production as immaculately well-crafted as Keene’s script The Guardian Hazlehurst’s performance is a masterclass in minimalism and emotional precision. Encore Melbourne Noni Hazlehurst, one of Australia’s most beloved stars of stage and screen, delivering a performance so deeply felt, so finely calibrated, that it lingers in the mind long after you leave the theatre.
