Join us in the cinema as we launch Issue 119 of Senses of Cinema with the Australian premiere of Dea Gjinovci's hybrid documentary following her father as he returns to Kosovo after 60 years in exile.
After 60 years in exile, Asllan and his daughter, director Dea Gjinovci, return to Makermal, the village he once called home.
They set out to revive his idyllic childhood memories, working with villagers to reconstruct a world erased by war. As playful re-enactments give way to haunting revelations, Dea and Asllan confront the painful disappearance of a beloved matriarch and the collective scars of a community grappling with memory and loss.
The Beauty of the Donkey is a moving meditation on the fragile architecture of remembrance, blending cinema du reel with magical realism. This special screening will begin with an introduction by Amanda Barbour, contributor to Issue 119 of Senses of Cinema.
